Pressure Seal Swing Check Valve – Self-Energizing High-Pressure Bonnet

Pressure seal swing check valves employ self-energizing bonnet designs where internal pressure forces the bonnet seal assembly tighter against sealing surfaces as pressure increases—eliminating the large bolted flanges and numerous bolts required for conventional bonnet retention in high-pressure service. This design becomes standard for ANSI Class 900, 1500, and 2500 applications (PN 150-420) across African oil & gas high-pressure injection wells, offshore production, and power plant superheated steam systems where pressure seal construction reduces weight, simplifies maintenance, and improves reliability versus bolted bonnet alternatives.

The bonnet seal ring sits in a tapered body cavity retained by a simple bonnet cap with 4-8 bolts (versus 16-32 bolts for equivalent bolted bonnet). As internal pressure increases, axial force pushes the seal ring into the taper, creating radial compression against the body bore and bonnet cap—pressure energizes the seal rather than working against it as in bolted bonnets. For African offshore platforms (Nigerian, Angolan waters) and high-pressure injection wells, this translates to 40-60% weight reduction versus bolted designs, faster field maintenance, and elimination of multi-bolt gasket failures common in high-pressure bolted applications.

Pressure Seal vs. Bolted Bonnet Selection

Specify Pressure Seal When: (1) Class 900, 1500, 2500 (PN 150-420)—standard for high-pressure, (2) Weight reduction critical (offshore platforms, subsea), (3) Simplified maintenance priority—4-8 cap bolts vs. 16-32 flange bolts, (4) High-temperature steam above 400°C where bolted gaskets prone to creep relaxation, (5) Frequent thermal cycling (steam turbine bypass) causing bolted flange stress.

Specify Bolted Bonnet When: (1) Class 150-600—pressure seal cost premium unjustified, (2) Frequent bonnet removal for inspection (pressure seal requires special tools, bolted bonnet simple wrenches), (3) Sizes below DN 50 where pressure seal geometry impractical.
