Why Duplex Stainless Steel Is Used

The structure of duplex stainless steel is a combination of ferrite and austenite. The bodies that have been cast are usually selected based on the ASTM A995 4A grade, whereas the wrought items may be based on the ASTM A182 F51. Both of these materials offer greater strength compared to normal 300 series stainless steel along with better pitting and stress-corrosion cracking resistance from chloride. ASTM A995 provides standards for duplex castings used in pressure containing valve components including Grade 4A among others. Selection requires application evaluation. Chloride, temperature, oxygen, pH, crevices, and fabricating procedures affect the lifespan of the product.

Maintainable Three-Piece Design

The valve uses a central body held between two end pieces. The ball, seats and seals are contained in the centre section, allowing inspection or replacement with less disturbance to the connected pipework. This suits process skids and lines where deposits or seat changes are expected.The stem turns the ball through 90 degrees. When the port aligns with the pipeline, flow passes through the valve; rotating it across the line gives shutoff. Full-bore construction keeps the opening close to the pipe bore, while reduced-bore construction gives a smaller body. Continuous throttling is not recommended unless the valve is designed for control duty.

Trim, Seat and Stem Arrangement

The body and end pieces may be cast in ASTM A995 Grade 4A or manufactured from wrought duplex material according to size and design. The ball, stem, gland parts and seat retainers should use F51, Grade 4A or another compatible grade. Corrosion resistance must be considered for the wetted assembly, not only the body.PTFE and RPTFE seats suit clean process water and many chemical services. PEEK may be selected for higher pressure or temperature, while metal seating is considered for abrasive particles, erosion or frequent cycling. Optional features include a blowout-resistant stem, anti-static device, fire-tested design, cavity-pressure relief and ISO 5211 actuator mounting.

Engineering Advantages

The three-piece arrangement makes internal maintenance more practical than on a one-piece valve. Duplex strength can support compact pressure-containing parts where permitted by the design standard. Quarter-turn operation gives fast isolation, but actuator torque must be calculated from valve size, differential pressure, seat friction and temperature.

Industrial Applications

Duplex three-piece ball valves are used in produced-water treatment, desalination support systems, chemical dosing, seawater utilities, pulp and paper plants, marine service and selected oil and gas lines. For severe warm seawater or concentrated brine, Super Duplex may be more suitable after a corrosion review.


Manufacturing and Inspection

Material Test Certificates confirm the specified cast or wrought grade. PMI, ferrite measurement, heat-treatment review and NDT may be included where required. Dimensional inspection checks body alignment, bore and end connections. Hydrostatic shell and seat-leakage tests confirm containment and shutoff.
