Simplex Basket Strainer

Engineering Design & Operation

A simplex basket strainer consists of a pressure-containing body, cover and removable cylindrical basket. Process fluid enters the housing and passes through the perforated plate or wire-mesh basket. Particles larger than the selected opening are retained inside the basket.

As debris builds up, the pressure drop across the basket increases. Pressure gauges or differential-pressure instruments can be provided to help operators identify when the basket needs cleaning. The cover may be bolted, hinged or fitted with a quick-opening arrangement depending on the design. Once the line is safely isolated and depressurized, the basket can be removed, cleaned and returned to service.

Basket construction can use perforated plate, woven wire mesh or a combination of both. The filtration grade is selected according to the required particle size and process conditions.
