Different Types of Butterfly Valves

As a leading butterfly valve manufacturer, African valve takes pride in delivering top-quality valves to various countries around the world.

A butterfly valve is a type of quarter-turn valve that is used to control or regulate the flow of fluids, typically liquids or gases, in a pipeline. It consists of a disc-shaped closure element, called the “butterfly,” which is connected to a rod or shaft positioned at the center of the valve. When the valve is open, the disc is rotated perpendicular to the flow direction, allowing the fluid to pass through the pipeline. Conversely, when the valve is closed, the disc is rotated parallel to the flow direction, blocking the flow of the fluid.

The disc of a butterfly valve is mounted within a circular or oval-shaped body, which contains a seat or sealing surface that the disc makes contact with when in the closed position. This seating arrangement provides a tight shut-off, minimizing leakage. Butterfly valves are known for their quick operation, as they can be opened or closed rapidly with a 90-degree rotation of the disc.

Butterfly valves are widely used in various industries, including oil and gas, water treatment and chemical processing. The types of butterfly valves are:

  • Concentric Butterfly Valves:

The concentric butterfly valve is the most common type of butterfly valve. It features a disk that is centered within the pipe and rotates 90 degrees to control the flow. This type is widely used due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. African Valve’s range of concentric butterfly valves offers superior performance and reliability.

  • Eccentric Butterfly Valves:

Eccentric butterfly valves are designed with the disk offset from the center of the pipe. This configuration allows for a bubble-tight shut-off and reduced seat wear. These valves are particularly suitable for applications that require a tighter seal and high-pressure capabilities.

  • High-Performance Butterfly Valves:

High-performance butterfly valves are engineered to handle demanding conditions, including high temperatures, high pressures, and corrosive environments. African Valve’s high-performance butterfly valves are manufactured using advanced materials and technology to ensure exceptional performance and durability.

  • Double Offset Butterfly Valves:

Double offset butterfly valves are designed with two offsets: the first offset is the position of the shaft relative to the centerline, and the second offset is the position of the seal ring in relation to the seat. These valves provide a tight seal and are ideal for applications that require bi-directional flow control.

  • Triple Offset Butterfly Valves:

Triple offset butterfly valves are the most advanced type of butterfly valves. They feature a unique design that eliminates rubbing between the seat and the seal ring, resulting in a bubble-tight shut-off and minimal wear. These valves are commonly used in critical applications where zero leakage is paramount.
