What is a Control Valve?

A control valve is a type of valve used in various industrial processes to regulate the flow of fluids such as liquids, gases, steam, or slurries. It operates by altering the size of the flow passage as directed by a signal from a controller. Comprising several key elements, control valves are designed to precisely adjust flow rates based on signals received from a controller. How does it work?

It operates by opening or closing to control the amount of fluid passing through a pipeline.

• The valve’s opening and closing are controlled by an actuator, which can be pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, or manual. The actuator receives signals from a controller, indicating how much the valve should open or close based on the desired flow rate.
• The controller then receives input from sensors placed in the process line. These sensors measure parameters like pressure, temperature, or flow rate. The controller compares these measurements to the desired setpoint and sends signals to the actuator to adjust the valve accordingly.
• Some control valves employ positioners to ensure precise positioning of the valve’s closure member. This helps in achieving accurate flow control, especially in processes requiring tight regulation.
• The control valve continuously adjusts its position based on feedback from the sensors and controller to maintain the desired flow rate or other process parameters.
