Key Features & Applications

Duplex Dual Plate Wafer Check Valve Manufacturer in Africa

Compact pump rooms and process skids often need reverse-flow protection without the weight and length of a conventional swing check valve. A wafer dual plate design fits between flanges and uses spring-assisted plates for a shorter closing stroke. African Valve is a leading Duplex Dual Plate Wafer Check Valve Manufacturer  in Africa, serving South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Angola, wider African markets and international project locations.

Wafer Body and Plate Arrangement

The body is centred between two mating flanges and retained by through-bolts. Inside the valve, two semicircular plates rotate around a hinge pin. Forward flow opens the plates; as velocity drops, torsion springs begin moving them back toward the seat.

The short travel can reduce reverse velocity before the plates close, which may lower the severity of valve slam. Complete water-hammer behaviour still depends on pump shutdown, line length, fluid density and system inertia.

Duplex Construction for Chloride Service

ASTM A995 Grade 4A is commonly used for cast duplex pressure parts, while ASTM A182 F51 may be used for forged or wrought components. The plates, springs, hinge pin and retainers should use compatible corrosion-resistant materials rather than relying only on the body grade. ASTM A995 specifically covers duplex stainless-steel castings for pressure-containing parts.

Duplex stainless steel offers higher strength than common austenitic grades and improved resistance to chloride-induced pitting and stress-corrosion cracking. Heat treatment, ferrite balance, welding and surface condition still influence performance.

Seat and Spring Selection

Metal seats are selected where temperature, abrasion or repeated cycling would damage soft materials. PTFE or resilient seats may provide lower leakage in clean water and moderate chemical service.

Spring torque affects cracking pressure, pressure drop and closing response. A spring that is too strong can increase opening differential, while a weak spring may allow delayed closure. The required orientation should therefore be stated before the spring package is selected.

API 594 covers wafer and other listed check-valve body configurations within its scope.

Pressure Drop and Stable Opening

A wafer check valve should be sized from actual flow data. Selecting the same nominal size as the pipe without checking velocity can leave the plates partly open. Repeated movement at low flow may cause flutter, spring fatigue, vibration and seat wear.

Manufacturer pressure-loss curves should be reviewed at normal and minimum operating flow. Cracking pressure and stable opening velocity are separate values and should not be confused.

Installation Requirements

Accurate centring between the flanges is essential. Misalignment can restrict plate movement or load the body unevenly. The adjoining pipe bore must also provide clearance for the plate edges and hinge arrangement.

For vertical upward flow, spring balance and plate weight must suit the direction. The line should be cleaned before commissioning so construction debris does not lodge around the hinge or seat.

Applications

Typical duties include desalination, marine cooling water, produced-water treatment, chemical transfer, process utilities and pulp and paper systems. Duplex wafer check valves are also used where installed weight and maintenance space are limited.

Inspection and Testing

MTC review and PMI confirm the body and internal materials. Dimensional checks cover face-to-face length, centring features and plate clearance. Shell testing, seat-leakage testing and spring-return checks are completed before release.

Compact Check Valve Supply

African Valve supplies duplex dual plate wafer check valves for industrial projects across Africa. The RFQ should state fluid chemistry, flow range, pressure, temperature, orientation, flange standard, minimum velocity, cracking pressure and seat requirement.
