Gate, Globe and Check Valves Used in Egypt's Power Plants

Egypt’s power sector relies heavily on large thermal and combined-cycle plants, where steam, feedwater, fuel gas, condensate, cooling water and utility systems all work under different operating conditions. Because of that, valve selection cannot be based on size alone.

Gate, globe and check valves are used throughout these plants, but each one has a different job. Gate valves are mainly used for isolation, globe valves are preferred where flow needs to be controlled, and check valves protect equipment by preventing reverse flow.

For power projects in Egypt, the final choice also depends on pressure, temperature, fluid type, material, end connection and the duty the valve is expected to perform.

1. Gate Valves for Isolation

In most power stations, gate valves are used where the line is expected to stay either fully open or fully closed. That makes them suitable for major isolation points in steam, feedwater and fuel-gas piping.

They are commonly used in:

  • Main steam lines

  • HRSG systems

  • Feedwater piping

  • Fuel-gas systems

  • Cooling-water circuits

  • Condensate lines

  • Pump suction and discharge piping

  • A gate valve used on a high-temperature steam line has very different demands from one used on a cooling-water system. Pressure class, body material, seat design and stem construction therefore need to match the service.

Wedge, and slab gate valves are all used in different applications. The selection normally depends on the system layout, operating conditions and project specification.

    2. Globe Valves for Steam and Feedwater Regulation

Globe valves are used when operators need to adjust flow rather than simply shut a line off.

Their internal design gives better throttling control than a gate valve, although the flow path also creates more pressure loss. In Egyptian thermal and combined-cycle plants, globe valves are often associated with steam, feedwater, drain and auxiliary services.

    Typical applications include:

  • Steam regulation

  • Feedwater control

  • Boiler and HRSG auxiliary lines

  • Drain and bypass systems

  • Fuel-gas regulation

  • Cooling-water control

  • Plant utility services

  • The duty becomes more demanding when the valve is handling high differential pressure or elevated temperature. In those situations, factors such as velocity, cavitation, flashing, vibration and trim erosion should be reviewed.

Where the valve will modulate regularly, a suitable control-globe design is usually more appropriate than treating a standard isolation valve as a regulating valve.

    3. Check Valves for Pump and System Protection

Check valves operate automatically. They allow flow in the intended direction and close when the flow starts to reverse.

This is especially important around pumps and compressors, where backflow can affect equipment performance and, in some cases, contribute to mechanical damage.

    Application

Why a Check Valve Is Used

    Boiler feedwater

    Prevent reverse flow

    Pump discharge

    Protect the pump

    Condensate system

    Prevent backflow

    Cooling-water system

    Protect circulation equipment

    Compressor discharge

    Prevent reverse gas flow

    HRSG auxiliaries

    Maintain correct flow direction

Swing, dual-plate, lift and axial-flow designs are commonly used, but the right choice depends on more than the pipe size.

Flow velocity, installation orientation and closing behaviour all matter. In liquid systems, a poorly selected check valve can contribute to pressure surges or water hammer, so the closing characteristics should be reviewed carefully.

Where These Valves Fit in Egyptian Combined-Cycle Plants

Combined-cycle plants bring together gas turbines, HRSGs and steam turbines. That means a single facility can contain several different piping services, each requiring a different valve function.

The final arrangement usually comes from the plant P&ID and equipment layout, because valve duty can change even within the same steam, water or utility system.

Material Selection for Egypt Power Projects

Valve material should be chosen around the actual service rather than using one material throughout the plant.

    Material

    Typical Grades

    Typical Use

    Carbon Steel

    ASTM A216 WCB, ASTM A105

    General plant service

    Low-Temperature Steel

    ASTM A352 LCB/LCC, ASTM A350 LF2

    Lower-temperature service

    Alloy Steel

    ASTM A217 WC6/WC9, ASTM A182 F11/F22

    High-temperature steam

    Stainless Steel

    ASTM A351 CF8M/CF3M, ASTM A182 F304/F316

    Corrosive service

    Duplex / Super Duplex

    ASTM A182 F51, F53, F55

    Chloride-bearing and demanding water service

For plants near coastal areas, corrosion and chloride exposure can become more important, particularly in cooling-water or seawater-related systems.

The body material is only one part of the valve. Stem, trim, seats, packing and other wetted parts should also be suitable for the fluid and operating conditions.

What Should Be Checked Before Buying?

For EPC contractors and plant operators, it is useful to start with the actual duty rather than only the valve name.

    Requirement

    What to Review

    Pressure and temperature

    Maximum design conditions

    Fluid

Steam, gas, feedwater, condensate or cooling water

    Function

    Isolation, regulation or reverse-flow protection

    Material

    Corrosion and temperature resistance

    Pressure drop

    Effect on system performance

    End connection

    Flanged, butt-weld or project specific

    Operation

    Manual, gear, electric or pneumatic

    Testing

Shell, seat and project inspection requirements

    Access and replacement requirements

For globe valves, differential pressure is particularly important. For check valves, flow rate and closing response matter more. For steam gate valves, pressure-temperature capability is one of the main selection points.

African Valve for Power Projects in Egypt

African Valve supplies gate, globe and check valves for power-generation applications in Egypt, including thermal and combined-cycle projects.

The valves can be supplied for main steam, HRSG, feedwater, condensate, fuel gas, cooling water, pump discharge and utility systems.

Depending on the service, configurations can be selected in carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, duplex and super duplex materials, with different pressure classes, end connections and operating arrangements.

For EPC contractors, plant operators and project buyers in Egypt, African Valve can review requirements based on the valve type, size, pressure class, material, operating conditions, quantity and project specification before quotation.
