Engineering Design & Operation

A plug valve uses a cylindrical or tapered plug with a flow passage through it. When the passage is aligned with the pipeline, the valve is open. Rotating the plug approximately 90 degrees moves the passage away from the flow path and closes the valve.

The electric actuator converts electrical power into rotary torque and transfers it to the valve operating mechanism. Depending on the actuator and valve design, the assembly can provide on/off operation or modulating control. Limit switches, position indicators and manual override arrangements can also be provided where required.

API 599 covers metallic plug valves with flanged, threaded and welding ends and includes both lubricated and non-lubricated designs, as well as valves with internal linings or hard-facing where applicable.
