Why the Three-Piece Design Is Used

The valve has a centre body held between two separate end connectors. The ball, seats and primary seals remain inside the centre section. During planned maintenance, this section can normally be removed while the end pieces stay connected to the pipeline. This reduces disturbance of pipe joints and suits valves that require periodic internal inspection. Clearance should be provided around the body bolts and actuator bracket.

Matching the Incoloy Grade to the Service

Incoloy 800, 800H and 800HT are used where oxidation resistance and strength at elevated temperature are important. Incoloy 825 is selected more often for corrosive chemical, acid and chloride-bearing environments. These grades should not be treated as interchangeable. Fluid composition, temperature, pressure, sulphur compounds, chlorides and cleaning chemicals should be reviewed before the grade is confirmed.

Quarter-Turn Operation

The stem rotates the ball through one quarter turn. The port aligns with the pipeline when open and moves across the flow for shutoff. Full-bore construction supports flushing, drainage and lower pressure loss. Reduced-bore construction gives a smaller body where the reduced passage is acceptable. The valve is designed mainly for isolation. Holding it partly open can expose the seat edge and ball port to concentrated velocity.

Body, Ball and Seat Materials

• Centre body and end connectors: Incoloy 825 may be selected for corrosive service, while Incoloy 800-series grades may be used for suitable high-temperature duties.

• Ball and stem: These parts should use the specified Incoloy grade or another compatible alloy.

• Seat retainers and fasteners: Lower-alloy components should be avoided where they contact the process fluid.

• Soft seats: PTFE and RPTFE suit many clean chemical services, while PEEK offers higher load resistance.

• Metal seats: These are considered for abrasive media, severe temperature or frequent cycling.

• Optional features: Blowout-resistant stem, cavity-pressure relief, fire-tested construction, anti-static continuity and ISO 5211 mounting may be supplied.

Maintenance and Installation

The line must be isolated, drained, depressurised and flushed before the centre section is removed. Where welded ends are used, installation heat should be controlled so the seats and seals are not damaged. Body bolting should be tightened evenly after maintenance. Actuator sizing should consider maximum differential pressure, seat friction, operating temperature and breakaway torque.
