Steam systems require reliable condensate removal to maintain heat-transfer efficiency, prevent water hammer and protect downstream equipment. These traps use a float mechanism that responds to condensate level inside the trap, opening and closing the discharge valve according to the amount of condensate present. Ball float steam traps are suitable for heat exchangers, process heaters, steam coils, air-handling systems, dryers, jacketed vessels, tracing systems and general industrial steam applications.
A ball float steam trap consists of a pressure-containing body, float, valve and seat, operating linkage and thermostatic air vent.
As condensate enters the trap, the float rises with the increasing liquid level. The float mechanism operates the discharge valve, allowing condensate to leave continuously. As the condensate level falls, the float moves down and the valve closes toward its seat.
The thermostatic air vent automatically releases air and other non-condensable gases during startup. As steam temperature is reached, the thermostatic element closes the vent.
This combination provides continuous condensate discharge and automatic air removal.
