Key Features & Applications

Alloy 20 Lug Butterfly Valve Manufacturer  in Africa

Large chemical pipelines need isolation valves that do not place excessive weight on pipe supports. An Alloy 20 lug butterfly valve provides a short body, quarter-turn disc and independent bolting to each pipeline flange. Alloy 20 wetted parts make the design suitable for sulphuric acid and selected chloride-containing services. African Valve is a topmost Alloy 20 Lug Butterfly Valve Manufacturer  in Africa, supplying Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana and supporting export requirements in the Middle East, Europe and other industrial regions.

What Is the Function of the Body Lugs?

Threaded lugs surround the valve body. Each pipe flange is bolted separately into these lugs rather than being connected with one set of long through-bolts. This arrangement keeps the valve centred and allows better control during installation.A lug valve may sometimes be used at the end of a pipeline after one flange has been removed. This is known as dead-end service. The allowable pressure can be lower in this condition, so dead-end capability must be verified from the selected valve design.

Concentric and Offset Designs

In a concentric butterfly valve, the shaft passes through the centre of the disc and seat. The disc edge remains in contact with the resilient seat during much of its travel. This simple arrangement suits moderate pressure and temperature.A double-offset design moves the shaft away from the disc centre and pipeline centreline. The disc separates from the seat shortly after opening, reducing rubbing and operating torque.Triple-offset valves introduce an additional angular offset and a conical sealing surface. This geometry is normally used with metal seats for higher temperature, pressure or cycling duty. The three constructions should not be treated as interchangeable.

Choosing Alloy 20 Wetted Components

Cast bodies and discs can be manufactured from ASTM A351 CN7M. Shafts and machined components may use ASTM A182 F20 or another compatible corrosion-resistant alloy.

PTFE and reinforced PTFE seats are frequently selected for chemical service. Elastomer seats may also be used where the actual fluid, temperature and concentration allow them. Metal seats are required when process conditions exceed the limits of resilient materials.

Shaft bearings and fasteners need equal attention. A chemically resistant disc does not protect lower-grade internal hardware from corrosion.

Technical Specifications

Size Range: DN50 to DN1200
Pressure Ratings: Class 150 to Class 300; PN10 to PN40
Design Standards: API 609 and ASME B16.34
Testing Standard: API 598
End Connections: Lug type for ASME B16.5 or EN flanges
Operation: Lever, gearbox, electric, pneumatic or hydraulic actuator

Engineering Benefits

  • Lugged ends provide independent flange fastening.

  • The compact body reduces pipe support loading.

  • Quarter-turn movement permits rapid isolation.

  • Alloy 20 resists many acidic and chloride-bearing fluids.

  • Offset geometries reduce seat rubbing in demanding service.

  • ISO 5211 mounting can simplify actuator installation.

Industrial Use

The valve is installed in sulphuric acid transfer, fertilizer plants, chemical processing, pickling lines and corrosive water-treatment systems. It is particularly practical for larger diameters where a ball or gate valve would occupy more space and carry considerably more weight.

Inspection and Testing

Lug threads, disc alignment, shaft movement and seat compression are checked during assembly. Hydrostatic shell and seat leakage tests confirm pressure integrity. Operating torque is measured to support gearbox or actuator sizing.

PMI, MTC review and NDT can be included when required by the project quality plan.
